It’s with a great sense of relief after the recent rain and subsequent filling of our dams, that we have the pleasure of updating you on the #SmartWaterMeterChallenge. Since the last newsletter, another 34 schools were added to the tally, bringing the total number of schools equipped with the Dropula to 299. During June we also accomplished some major milestones together:
- We reached a saving of R8.9 million; substantially more than what we’ve spent.
- We surpassed a total saving of 100 million litres of water.
- We saved—for the first time—a million litres in a single day (a regular occurrence since then).
Below is a visual representation of the savings at one school, where the blue is the actual water usage volume measured, the green is the volume saved and the dashed red line is the school’s baseline usage calibrated in the first week of receiving the Dropula hardware.
We would like to, once again, thank our generous sponsors for their support. For more information and the tracking dashboard, visit www.schoolswater.co.za. Our behavioural experiment is still going strong, and we have learned of another corporate who may be sponsoring its continuation, so watch this space.
I’m also happy to report that Arno Scholtz has joined us as General Manager, and he is already swimming well in the deep end! We are also looking for an exceptional web app developer to support our growing business.

We greatly appreciate your sustained support and interest in this important and exciting project.
